Our theme for 2023 is The Light Shines in the Darkness: Leadership in Uncertain Times. We will balance education with community time, and offer meaningful worship and personal self-care. Plan on a keynote, 15+ workshops to choose from, as well as small group reflection time, and a Wellness Day trip. Check back here for the conference schedule soon.

2023 Annual Conference Keynote Speakers

The Rev. John B. Burruss

The Rev. John B. Burruss serves as the Rector of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama, a vibrant church of 1800 members that has found growth and renewal through a global pandemic and a tragedy where three church members were killed at a church potluck. Saint Stephen’s leadership in formation, outreach, pastoral care, and care of creation is a model for congregational development for the wider Episcopal Church.

As the first church in central Alabama to tackle Solar Energy, Saint Stephen’s is also home of parish apiary, hosts monthly Holy Hikes and an annual Canoecharist on the Cahaba River, works with a local regenerative farm to host a CSA pick up for the neighborhood, and has an ambitious program to remove all invasive species from the 6-acre campus and introduce native plants. Prior to serving at Saint Stephen’s, John was the Canon for Sustainable Ministries for the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee.

John is a graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia and completed his MBA at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee. In his free time, John enjoys fishing, cycling, and trying to learn how to poorly play new musical instruments. John and his spouse, Anne, have two children: Jack and Bailey.

The Rev. Isaiah “Shaneequa” Brokenleg

The Reverend Isaiah “Shaneequa” Brokenleg (she/her) is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe (Sicangu Nation). She is an Episcopal priest in the diocese of South Dakota. From a cultural perspective, she believes we are all related and, as such, we are all called to be “good relatives” to one another. As a winktè, Shaneequa is called to be a healer and move communities in the direction of positive change. From an academic perspective, she has a Masters of Public Health Degree from the University of Minnesota and a Masters of Divinity degree from Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Shaneequa is the Staff Officer for Racial Reconciliation at the Episcopal Church as a member of the presiding bishop’s staff and the Associate Rector at Church of the Good Shepherd. She is passionate about social justice, and working to end the structural oppression/violence that hurts us all. Shaneequa strives to live out her calling through her work, our church, her art, and in her life.
