One Year On: A Visit to Lake Logan

Posters at Lake Logan featuring photos and stories of the aftermath of Hurricane Helene

It was an honor to represent ECCC at Lake Logan on the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene with the people of the Diocese of Western North Carolina.

A year later and there is still so much to do. A new road now replaces the one lost to the river after massive lateral erosion from the storm. Before swimming in the lake, staff check for debris. And looking ahead, extensive dredging will be needed—along with hopes for grant support to install riprap and stabilize the riverbank to prevent future erosion.

Many may not know the incredible work of Lake Logan’s Executive Director, Laura Elliot, and her staff in the aftermath of the storm. When I visited a week after the hurricane, Lake Logan had already become a hub of hope—providing resources, showers, meals, and connection for the people of Haywood County and beyond.

While some colleges were closed for weeks, Lake Logan alumni showed up saying, “Put me to work.” They told me how camp shaped them into the people they are today and gave back in any way they could.

This is the Church. This is the power of camp.
